Life assumes prominence in "Suspended Speech", where Villa vividly portrays daily life at Konvent, a converted former convent nestled in Berguedà, serving as an artistic sanctuary where artists evade the dehumanization of capitalism, skillfully weaving their own existence with creativity and collective care. The melancholic tone suffusing the film eloquently conveys the beauty of impermanence, thereby celebrating life in its chaotic and unpredictably intricate entirety.

"Suspended Speech" invites viewers to immerse themselves in the community of artists who have sought refuge at Konvent, a former convent of nuns repurposed into an artistic hub in the Berguedà region of Catalonia. Set against the backdrop of rural Catalonia, this documentary provides an intimate portrayal of the daily lives of its inhabitants. These individuals grasp that capitalism’s core essence lies in devaluing human life to mere accumulation—a realization that transforms their alternative organization into a political and profoundly aesthetic endeavor.
Central to the narrative is the community’s collective belief in the intrinsic value of artistic expression, liberated from the confines of capitalist production. They confront challenges of remaining independent from institutional structures, inspired by thinkers such as Silvia Federici as they strive to reclaim not only artistic means but the essence of life itself. Through communal gardens, artistic initiatives, and networks of mutual support, they actively forge alternative models grounded in autonomy and collaboration.
Behind the lens, the narrative voice imbues each frame with a poignant melancholy, eloquently conveying the beauty found in impermanence. "Discurso en suspensión" authentically depicts life through observational imagery, providing a candid and vivid portrayal of daily moments, emotions, and experiences within Konvent, unrestricted by conventional narrative boundaries.
From shared meals and artistic workshops to spontaneous musical sessions and midnight performances, every scene brims with the vitality of existence. Amidst the buzz and creativity, solidarity, mutual aid, and collective care emerge as the guiding principles weaving the tapestry of communal life at Konvent.
In celebrating life’s intricate and unpredictable nature, Villa delicately and profoundly articulates a nostalgia for life and a longing for its enduring essence.
